Tom earned a BS degree in Business Administration from UNC-Charlotte, and spent 16 years within the banking technology marketplace. He spent 10 of those years running sales and marketing nationally for a 1,200 person, $100 million technology firm in Charlotte and was then hired as Chief Operating Officer for a local 55 person technology start-up that developed retail delivery systems into the banking industry.
In March 1997, Tom left to start an executive search firm to fill a void in the marketplace. Most candidates and companies that have used executive search firms have had poor experiences along the way. He built NEAR & Associates, over a 13 year period, into one of the most successful search firms in Charlotte, and the firm achieved many accolades, including being voted the #1 Best Place to Work by The Charlotte Business Journal for 2009 and 2010. The firm was ranked #1 in size for 8 of those years as well. He has since organized a new search firm, CPG Search Partners, that focuses exclusively on the CPG industry. The firm has a simple philosophy that will pay dividends for the firm’s clients and associates. “Our top two priorities that fuel our culture are serving our clients first, and our associates next, and little else matters.” Many companies talk about this level of service, very few truly deliver it to both sides. He is building CPG Search Partners around the associates, with the vision of creating several layers of partners within the firm.
